Selection Open Call for participation in Transmediale 2017
In the summer of 2016, the Creative Industries Fund NL reached out to creatives and organisations that were interested in presenting their work during the 30th anniversary edition of the Transmediale Festival in Berlin. Through an Open Call, initiated by the Grant Programme for Digitale Culture, the organisers of Transmediale and the fund selected a group of Dutch makers and projects to participate in the programme. The following eight participants were selected from more than 50 proposals:
Impakt Festival - On the Origin of Androids: semi theatrical panel discussionAn exercise in speculative retro-futurism by Koert van Mensvoort, Floris Kaayk and Peter-Paul Verbeek, professor of philosophy of humans and technology. Floris Kaayk and Koert van Mensvoort present recent projects, including The Modular Body and Het Kweekvlees Kookboek. Peter-Paul Verbeek places their work in a philosophical and trans-humanist perspective.
The Instrument Inventors Initiative (iii)During Transmediale, the iii collective will present itself with a series of performances, workshops and installations that have been developed in recent years.
Rosa Menkman - DCT:SYPHONING: presentationThe presentation DCT:SYPHONING by Rosa Menkman was originally developed as a commission for the Photographers Gallery in London, where it was displayed as a PowerPoint presentation. In the following months, the work evolved into a 3-channel video installation for Transfer Download in San Francisco and New York. In February, the final version of DCT:SYPHONING will be released as a 3D virtual reality presentation.
Jeroen van Loon - An Internet: installationAn Internet is an installation consisting of a large and complex glass tubing system which depicts the current location of undersea Internet cables. Joep van Liefland - Video Palace #43 – The Hidden Universe: installationJoep van Liefland’s installation is made up of approximately 20,000 VHS tapes that are arranged into a sculpture you can walk through.
The selection was made by Kristoffer Gansing (director Transmediale Festival), Inke Arns (curator Alien Matter) and Eric Kluitenberg (independent advisor representing the Creative Industries Fund NL). The call for participation in Transmediale encouraged the Dutch creative sector to take part in the festival, as well as ensured that Dutch makers were on the radar of Transmediale and other international curators. The submissions were positively received thanks to their high-quality artistry and good balance between emerging and established makers.
The theme of the 30th Transmediale, Ever Elusive, offers both contemporary and historic perspectives on 30 years of media art. The critical and artistic knowledge gained over the past three decades forms the foundation from which the contemporary role of media and technology is examined. The programme includes Alien Matter, a major exhibition curated by Inke Arns. As part of this, the fund is supporting two new productions: the DullDream App and Video Palace #43 – The Hidden Universe. The installation An Internet will also be also part of the exhibition. During the festival programme, which takes place at het Haus der Kulturen der Welt from 2 to 5 February, you will also find presentations and performances by Rosa Menkman, the Instrument Inventors Initiative, Metahaven, Machine Wilderness and Impakt, among others. Visit the Transmediale website for additional information about the programme.
