In the previous phase, Play the City (NL) and Mersin University (TR) developed, together with local partners, city game sessions as an interactive means to work with various stakeholders to design an integrated urban transformation plan for two city boroughs (Demirtas en Alsancak) around the Murtu River in the Turkish city of Mersin. The sessions focused on the following five themes: housing, water, mobility, urban agriculture and the local economy. Around 200 participants came together, including community organisations, NGOs, various departments of the municipality, water companies, the architects' association and experts in each field. Partners include: SokakBizim Istanbul, Amsterdam Rainproof, Mediamatic and city lab Buiksloterham.

In this follow up phase, the team will focus on further strengthening the new city lab and on expanding the activities. The activities consist of: 1) organising new game sessions in another city borough, the fast growing Mezitli district, with a particular focus on encouraging women and migrants in the local economy to participate, 2) developing a new game session around sustainable food/slow food, 3) establishing an agreement with the Mersin municipality to implement the plans, 4) publishing a book about the process of setting up the Mersin Citylab and the results so far. The publication gives examples from both Mersin and Amsterdam and is written by Turkish and Dutch experts and stakeholders. The team intends to organise a book launch during the We Make The City 2020 in Amsterdam event, followed by a book launch in Turkey.

Harvesting Optimism is a film that showcases and shares the knowledge and results from the research project Closing the Circle with a wide audience. 'CLOSING THE CIRCLE' developed new design guidelines for closed loop farming systems. Arman Akdogan and Felix Madrazo – founders of IND, Inter.National.Design, are involved in this project, together with Turkish and Dutch researchers, innovative farmers and energy consultants.

In this follow-up phase the team is making a short documentary that addresses the themes from the design study, such as innovative agricultural practices, circularity, art, design and energy transitions. In this film, both Turkish and Dutch experts discuss on-site -- in Rotterdam, Erzincan, Almere, Istanbul and Bursa -- the experiments they are currently involved with. The film also shows some highlights from the Closing the Circle conference. It is the aim of this film to show new practices that are a positive driving force in the agricultural sector today, such as Dutch and Turkish sustainable farming projects that take a responsible approach to the environment, the city, animal welfare and sustainable use of resources. Onur Can Tepe (script writer), Gülfem Akdoğan (video editor) and Melis Eryiğit Samir (marketing & PR) are added to the core team to produce this film. Thereby, the team will get assistance from experienced filmmakers, among onthers Jasper Goldman and Stefan Malešević.

In the previous phase, Sustainable Solutions (NL), Artgineering (BE) and Novusens (TR) developed an integral cycling master plan for the Turkish city of Lüleburgaz. The plan, in the form of a book, shows how cycling can be used as a catalyst for a more sustainable, inclusive and democratic urban community. The plan takes a holistic approach consisting of three different elements: hardware, software and orgware.

In this follow-up phase, the team will focus on sharing their knowledge with other Turkish cities that are looking at investing more resources into cycling. The format is a 'Bicycle Road Show' campaign, whereby a team will visit four cities in the course of a week: Istanbul (opening), Bursa, Eskisehir and finally Ankara. During this tour, the team will organise meetings, workshops and seminars with municipalities and other stakeholders. Although a lot of Turkish cities have already started to invest in cycling projects such as bike sharing systems and the construction of cycle paths, the team noticed during previous phases that not much knowledge is available with regard to 'how' best to do this. Additionally, the city of Lüleburgaz is different from other cities as this municipality first invested in creating a positive perception around cycling before investing in the physical cycling infrastructure. Recently introduced new Turkish legislation encourages investment in cycling networks and the team therefore believes that this is a good time to further spread the knowledge that has been acquired. The road show will take place mid-April 2020.

In the previous phase, Knitwear Lab (NL), knitting manufacturer BersaTriko (TR) and the Textile department of Marmara University (TR) designed a hat and scarf collection using residual materials from the textile industry for the new 'Realist' brand. The team looks at ways to regenerate clean, unworn residual materials into new strong yarn that can be reused. The team visited recycling region Uşak to learn more about the waste issues caused by the huge textile production industry in Turkish cities. Fashion house Maison the Faux presented an interactive performance at the launch of the collection at the Dutch Consulate General in Istanbul. It is the aim of this project to convince both consumers and the textile industry that it is possible to have a regenerated fashion industry in Turkey.

In this follow-up phase, the team will focus on the following two objectives: 1) sharing knowledge with students and professionals in the fashion field and 2) in-depth research and process improvements to enable fashion chains to implement this on a larger scale. The team is developing workshops for Turkish and Dutch universities, fashion brands and retailers. Knitwear Lab, in partnership with yarn developers Haksa (TR) and Espima (TR), is also looking at ways to improve the quality of the yarn and how other types of residual materials such as printed and used fabrics can be reused. After all, a large-scale implementation of the project requires a large quantity of residual materials. During this phase, the team will also approach a number of prominent Turkish, Dutch and German fashion chains.

In the previous phase, Schiemann Weyers Architects and various Russian and Dutch partners carried out research into the demolition of the historical heritage of the post-socialist city of Samara (the 'Wooden City' and the 'Samarsky Yard'). In this project the team aims to establish a dialogue about the meaning of the city's heritage and the specific architecture for the city's identity and how to bridge the gap between citizens, activists, developers and the authorities. The team organised a series of meetings and, together with graphic designer Joost Grootens, developed a design for an atlas in which all the collected information can be presented to the various stakeholders in an accessible and objective way.

In this follow-up phase, the team will focus on further knowledge sharing and the publication of the atlas in the form of a book. The team had originally thought to create only a digital atlas, but in the previous phase they came to the conclusion that a physical book will better emphasise the quality and relevance of the information for the relevant stakeholders in Russia. The book will consist of approximately 400 pages, hundreds of maps, graphs, typographies, photos, stories and interviews. The collaboration partner, Russian publisher Tatlin Publishing House, will be responsible for production and distribution. The book will be published in English and Russian. The team will organise a symposium in the House of Architects in Samara about this project in May 2020 when they release the first 1000 copies of the book.
