Inclusive regenerative fashion in Turkey
Knitwear Lab, Bersa Triko, Marmara University, 2019
€50.000
'Inclusive regenerative fashion in Turkey' is a design research into creative solutions for the large waste flow produced by textile production in Turkish cities. The core team consists of Knitwear Lab (NL), knitting manufacturer Bersa Triko (TR), yarn developers Espima and Orsateks (TR) and the Textile department of Marmara University (TR). The team is investigating how they can regenerate residual materials from textile production into a new kind of yarn. These residual materials are still clean, since they have not yet been used or washed, so the fibres are still strong and suitable to be developed into a new type of yarn. Through innovative knitting techniques, this yarn can be used for new fashion products and designs. The project also seeks to promote an inclusive culture and working environment in the fashion industry. €50.000
After preliminary research and the strengthening of working relationships, the next phase consists of: further development of the fibres, testing design prototypes and presenting the final designs. Designers of fashion brands Daily Paper and Maison the Faux are creating a capsule collection with the newly developed yarn. The project and these creations will be presented at a meeting at the Dutch Consulate General in Istanbul and at international fashion and design fairs. In addition, the team will organise workshops to share their knowledge and experience with fashion and textile students and researchers from the Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences and Marmara University. The team is also looking for Turkish designers who can be involved in the process and are investigating the possibility of collaborating with large retail chains.
