Selection Salone del Mobile Milan 2017
In October 2016, the Creative Industries Fund NL asked designers to submit proposals for a presentation during the Salone del Mobile 2017, one of the largest international fairs for furniture and product design. From the 47 proposals, external advisors Annemartine van Kesteren, Suzan Russeler and Marleen Engbersen selected 12 to receive grants. The selection consists of designers and collectives that are exploring new materials and techniques, focusing on creative design processes, engaging in unique forms of collaboration and preparing distinctive presentations for better visibility in Milan.
The selection includes:
Overall, Engbersen, Van Kesteren and Russeler were positive about the quality of the proposed group presentations. The advisors were somewhat disappointed by the quality of the individual presentations, but they did appreciate the professional and strategic approach of these proposals. They therefore felt that the proposals shouldn’t be evaluated on artistic innovation alone, but that designers should also be given the opportunity to pursue and present their design identity in a strategic, consistent line. That gives designers the chance to take advantage of the contacts they’ve already established. As an extension of that, the advisors included a number of proposals in the final selection which had previously received a grant to present in Milan. They took a critical look at where the designer or studio was in their career and how the presentation could contribute to their next steps. The motivation for the presentations combined with a long-term strategy offered greater insight into the significance of the presentation for the individual practice as well as the Dutch design field.
Presentation proposals where companies/clients worked together with design studios were appreciated, because they strengthen the position of the design studios. However, one downside mentioned by the advisors was that the clients in these groups showed little financial commitment.
The committee also noted that a number of presentation proposals were submitted by designers working in other disciplines, such as fashion and jewellery. The advisors believed that such presentations only add value if it’s clear how from the proposal how the presentation relates to the context of a furniture fair. The advisors felt that the applicants didn’t sufficiently consider this.
The submitted proposals were evaluated according to the criteria of the Open Call Salone del Mobile Milan 2017 which are connected to the three main goals of the internationalisation programme:
• Strengthen the image of the Dutch design sector
• Build sustainable partnerships for collaboration
• Increase the international scope of the Dutch design sector
The selected proposals are representative of the Dutch design sector and contribute to strengthening the image of the Dutch creative industries in the context of an international trade fair.
The Salone del Mobile Milano runs from 4 to 9 April 2017. The selected presentations will take place at a variety of locations, including Palazzo Clerici, Spazio Rossanna Orlandi and Ventura Lambrate, were many of the Dutch presentations are found every year. Other presentations from the selection will take place at the Salone Satellite, which focuses on emerging talent, and some of the projects will be found at new locations, such as the Spazio O' in the Isola neighbourhood.
