Maatwerk Masswerk – Architecture from Flanders and the Netherlands

8 October 2016 until 12 February 2017

The ‘Maatwerk Massarbeit. Architektur aus Flandern und den Niederlanden / Custom Made Architecture from Flanders and the Netherlands’ exhibition at the Deutsches Architekturmuseum in Frankfurt uses a selection of scale models to cast light on custom-made work, precision and craftsmanship as an undercurrent in Flemish and Dutch architecture of the last 30 years.
Despite the shared language and the relative cultural familiarity, architects in the Netherlands and Flanders operate in a strikingly different architectural climate and spatial and cultural context. By way of this shared anthology, the organizers hope to prompt a new dialogue between two architecture cultures based on the selected scale models. The exhibition’s curators are Sofie De Caigny of the Flemish Architecture Institute (VAi) in Antwerp and Veldwerk Architecten.

Symposium
On 7 October there will be a symposium to explore the architectural context of Flanders and the Netherlands. Young as well as established architects from Flanders and the Netherlands will present their practices and discuss the architectural culture in which they operate. The symposium is an initiative of Creative Industries Fund NL and the Flemish Architecture Institute (VAi).

Dialogues
During the exhibition there will be four dialogues between young and established architects about the recent architectural culture in the Low Countries on the basis of its distinctive qualities. These dialogues are an initiative of Het Nieuwe Instituut (HNI) in association with the Flemish Architecture Institute (VAi). The first and last session will take place at the Deutsches Architekturmuseum (DAM) in Frankfurt, the second at HNI in Rotterdam and the third at the VAi in Antwerp.

This exhibition is part of the cultural programme accompanying the Frankfurt Book Fair, where the Netherlands and Flanders are this year’s guest of honour. Creative Industries Fund NL has contributed to the exhibition as well as to the content of the opening programme.

Agua Carioca

5 November 2016 until 17 March 2017

Ooze architects initiated the Água Carioca project, a project which fundamentally turns around the concept of how we deal with water and wastewater in urban areas. Instead of having to collect and transport it from each house to a treatment plant outside the city, the wastewater is cleaned and re-used directly wherever it is produced. Two presentations on this subject opened in Rio de Janeiro on 5 November 2016.
A pilot project at the Sítio Roberto Burle Marx gardens demonstrates how this system can be implemented on a small scale and the four project proposals on display here envisage how the Água Carioca project could be implemented on a larger scale.

At Studio-X the process of the pilot project’s construction is explained in detail, and Ooze’s ideas that underpin the Água Carioca project are highlighted in an interview. Small-scale, environmentally friendly treatment units are integrated into neighbourhoods without the need for building lengthy and costly sewers, thus creating a healthy, beautiful and clean habitat. Residents are engaged during the process and become aware of the water cycle and water recycling. They turn from passive consumers into resource-conscious citizens who actively participate in shaping a healthy living environment.

With the Água Carioca project there is no need for large-scale infrastructural engineering, no transportation of dirty water and 50% less transportation of clean water. This offers a durable solution that is potentially applicable in all areas which are not connected to a sewer network (currently about 70% of the State of Rio de Janeiro). The two presentations are on display until 17 March 2017. The pilot will run for a minimum of two years. This project is being supported via the Internationalization Programme.
