Grant Programme for Internationalization Open Call

Open Call Morocco: PLAY CITY

Network of Research & Architecture BV en MB Paysage, 2018

€15.000
Network of Research & Architecture (NoRA) maintains that urbanization in Rabat is not always accompanied by the development of well-used public spaces. The public spaces that do exist are too formal in many cases and do not really invite use. That is why NoRA proposes appropriating abandoned, open or residual spaces and reintroducing them as small-scale public places for daily city life recreation, such as playing. According to the team, these sites could contribute to social interaction, commitment to the neighbourhood, recreation and a feeling of being at home. In the start phase, the activities will consist of generating an inventory of potential locations, a survey and street interviews, a literature study and workshops and lectures. The team is involving specialists from various disciplines, including sociologists and other designers, for further collaboration. The method is hands-on and focuses on field work, where spaces are identified and the potential to transform them into ‘urban rooms’ is explored. In this way they are working towards a new design proposal for the next phase.
PLAY CITY is a project by NoRA in collaboration with MB Paysage and is led by landscape architect Mounia Bennani, who is based in Rabat.

Grant Programme for Internationalization Exhibition

Public Structures - Rotterdam, New York, Medellin

ZUS (Zones Urbaines Sensibles), 2018

€25.780
Design agency ZUS is participating in the exhibition “Polis: towards a political reconstruction of the city” in Museo de Antioquia in Medellín, Colombia. The agency is carrying out a designing study, titled The Naked Museum, in which it explores the question whether the shape and structure of a museum should not be something radically different than a sealed box with a generous entry fee. The subject of the study is the Museo de Antioquia itself. The study will look at how the expansion of the museum can be part of the transformation of the neighbourhood. The study and the exhibition together form the basis for the discussion of the plans with the local authorities, with the goal of realising this. The Naked Museum forms part of three design proposals for three different cities, in which ZUS raises political issues in a visual manner: fragmentation (Luchtsingel - Rotterdam), unaffordability (House for the Homeless - New York) and segregation (The Naked Museum - Medellín). In order to flesh out these subjects for the general public, ZUS is building three models of each project (scales 1:100 and 1:50), with photos, videos and literature. ZUS and other international experts will hold lectures and workshops around the theme of the exhibition. The exhibition will run from 26 September 2018 to January 2019.

Grant Programme for Internationalization Festival

Seoul International NewMedia Festival 2018 (NeMaf 2018)

iGong Alternative Visual Culture Factory, 2018

€7.330
The Seoul International New Media Festival (NeMaf) and LIMA, the expertise centre for the archiving and distribution of media arts, are consolidating their collaboration and inviting Dutch makers to present themselves at the festival. LIMA’s two guest curators, Theus Zwakhals and Sanneke Huisman, chose the three makers Douwe Dijkstra, Joris Strijbos and Daan Johan. The programme consists of multimedia screening installations of a selection of Dutch media art from the years 1960-1980 and a selection of contemporary Dutch media art. Furthermore, Joris Strijbos and Daan Johan will be showing the audio-visual live performance Phyllotaxis, in which algorithms are used to transform the room into a hypnotic vortex through the intermingling of abstract patterns of light and sound. Douwe Dijkstra is a jury member for the New Media Alternative Cinema competition. The makers and curators will also be participating in the Curator & Artist Talk audience programme. The NeMaf festival focuses on three themes – gender, human rights and artistry – and emphasises the discovery of artistic talent with a critical perspective. This year, the festival’s theme is Counter-Memory and the Reconstruction of Body Movement, and it will be held from 21 to 25 February.

Deep Fake Impakt Collaborative Panel @ Ars Electronica

Ars Electronica, 2018

€7.450
Deep Fake Impakt collaborative is a collaboration between Ars Elektronica and Impakt. Impakt is programming a one-day panel at the Ars Electronica Festival 2018, which will take place from 6 to 10 September in Austria. Each year, Ars Electronica offers more than 1,000 artists and scientists from over 40 countries a platform for art, science and technology. The panel will consist of presentations and discussions. Additionally, lectures will be held by media producers, artists and scientists from the Netherlands and Austria. Workshops for the visitors will also be held under the guidance of experts. Deep Fake is a combination of “deep learning” and “fake”: a technique for human image synthesis based on artificial intelligence. The capacity of computers to create a convincing but non-authentic reality is increasingly becoming a problem now that hackers are attempting to control the media narrative by using increasingly convincing fake images. The panel discussion will speculate on a possible future for these computer-generated realities and propose strategies for the regulation or even combating of artificial realities.

Bestiary of Autonomous Machines

Studio Arvid&Marie, 2018

€7.500
Bestiary of Autonomous Machines is a collective study by Arvid Jense and Marie Caye (Studio Arvid&Marie) into a future in which people and autonomous machines coexist. After a series of workshops in various locations in the Netherlands and the USA, the designer duo will organise the final workshop at the Istanbul Design Biennale 2018. In their workshops, they share practical and philosophical concepts in the area of the application of artificial life with children, students, young professionals and academics. The participants expand the concepts into a short story with an image and a paper, clay, mechanical or 3D model. Studio Arvid&Marie is working towards a total of 200 workshop results, of which they will display 50 concepts in a digital bestiary. This is an online archive that they are developing in collaboration with visual designer Baptiste Labat and copywriter Vincent Thornhill, and which will be presented at the Istanbul Biennale (22 September to 4 November 2018). Studio Arvid&Marie is also developing an online version of the workshop to continue feeding the archive.

3 Days of Fat

Thought Collider, 2018

€3.000
3 Days of Fat is a live research programme by designers Mike Thompson (Thought Collider) and Arne Hendriks in collaboration with Dr Charlotte Mills of the Nutritional Sciences department at King’s College London. The programme comprises various experiments, discussions and events around Fatberg, an island the makers are building using fat. With the Fatberg as its icon, the programme seeks to make a wider public more aware of fat as a substance and to stimulate a dialogue about fat as a material. Over the course of three days, the team will investigate the role of fat within a specific theme each day: Life + Ecology, Health + Beauty and Energy. MU Artspace in Eindhoven and Stichting NDSM in Amsterdam are supporting the production of the Fatberg. The programme is part of the King’s College London Innovation Award and a long-term project of the makers concerning fat.
